February sumi boldmeeting

Thursday Feb. 7, 2008
6:00-8:00pm
Museum of Printing History

Please RSVP to me: mlight@printingmuseum.org if you plan to attend. This
headcount is extremely helpful for the presenter preparing the materials.

Program:
Suminagashi: The subtle art of Japanese marbling with Anne Cheney
$5.00

Suminagashi, the Japanese tradition of paper marbling, literally means
"spilled ink". In this method of decorating paper, the artist floats sumi
(ink) on the surface of still water and disperses the ink with another liquid,
gently alternating the two, time and again, until a unique pattern forms.
The artist then captures the design by carefully touching paper to the
water's surface.

In the Japanese tradition, a suminagashi artist's designs might then
be passed to watercolorists and/or calligraphers. - The suminagashi
marbling can be a subtle background to additional art.

This process is one you can easily do at home without a big expenditure
for special equipment.

All materials needed for this workshop will be provided for the cost of
$5.00. - but this is a messy process, so bring an apron or smock &/or wear clothing you won't mind being stained by the sumi ink, - or getting wet.

Anne Cheney
Second time presenter to our Book Arts Group, Anne Cheney has participated in the International Marbler's gathering in California, New Mexico and Istanbul, Turkey. She is a founding and charter member of the Houston Calligraphy Guild, and is an International Master Penman. She has studied at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico and attended Arrowmont in Tennessee as both a student and instructor. Anne also likes to paint and do origami. In her words, she does "anything to keep from having to scrub the kitchen floor"!

We have three wonderful exhibits up at the museum now, plan to spend some time in the galleries when you first arrive next week.

I look forward to seeing everyone Thursday Feb. 7th,
